Overview

How to configure your Telus home router to add additional porn filtering

Note:  Telus does have its own adult content filtering tools but you can follow these additional steps to add additional porn filtering to your home network.

Get your admin credentials?

To configure your Telus Network Access Hub (aka: Router) you need to get the admin credentials located under the cover plate.  Once you remove the cover, you should see a sticker with this information.

How to remove the cover:

The following video shows how to remove the cover of your Telus Router

Only follow the first step to remove the outside cover.  You do NOT need to remove the router from the wall.

How to configure your router:

Try logging onto the following page:  http://192.168.1.254

Login using the admin username and password you found under the cover of your router

Click on the "Network" tab on the left

The "WAN" tab on the top

Then the "Edit" button

Under WAN DNS Setting

Connect to DNS server automatically:  NO

DNS Server 1:  208.67.222.123

DNS Server 2:  208.67.220.123

Click "Save Settings"

Disable IPv6:

As of early 2025, for this to work properly, you must disable IPv6 functionality on your router.
Open DNS Family Shield DNS does not currently support IPv6 Internet Traffic
Click on the "IPv6" tab
Under:
  • Network > IPv6
  • IPv6 WAN Setting
    • IPv6:  Disabled
    • Click "Save Settings"

You may need to reboot your devices before the changes take effect.
Your Desktop, Laptops and basic network devices should not have network traffic filtered by Open DNS Family shield now.
A blocked website will look something like this:

Additionally, you can setup Adult content filtering on your home network using the "TELUS Connect" app.  See the following article for more info:

iPhones:  "Private Relay"

As of early 2025, iOS 14 and higher has a feature called "Private Relay" that by-passes these settings on your home network.  If you are not using "Parental Controls" on your iPhones, you should disable this setting for this feature to work.

Turn iCloud Private Relay off

  1. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay, then tap Private Relay.

    • Turn off iCloud Private Relay completely: Tap Turn Off Private Relay.
